Making Use of that Stale Sandwich Bread
Homemade GF bread is far superior to the store-bought kind, but it does have one drawback. It doesn’t always last as long! While I find that I can bring it back to life with a little toast in a pan or in the oven, you may find yourself looking for more creative ways to use up the end of that sandwich loaf.
Here are my top three favorites for leftover sandwich bread:
Make croutons
Cut your leftover sandwich bread into 1/2 inch to 1 inch cubes, toss in your choice of oil or butter, season with your favorite all-purpose seasoning, and toast in the oven on a parchment-lined tray at 300F until they are crispy on the outside and slightly fluffy on the inside.
Make breadcrumbs
Break your sandwich bread into small pieces by crumbling it between your fingers. Toast on a parchment-lined tray at 200F, stirring every fifteen minutes, until the crumbs are easy to break apart into very fine pieces and feel dry to the touch. Store in a glass jar, and use for your favorite fried dishes or to top casseroles.
Make french onion soup
Cut your sandwich bread into thick slices (1 1/2 inch is my preferred thickness), then toast in a pan on each side until crispy. Top your french onion soup with your thick-sliced bread and some cheese, and then pop under a broiler until the cheese is bubbly.
